Wisdom teeth are the hardest ones to reach and clean, so they are more likely to experience tooth decay. When a person has a problematic wisdom tooth, the standard treatment is to extract it. 3. Bone grafts

Bone grafts are often performed when a person does not have an adequate amount of healthy jawbone tissue. This can be the result of a bone tissue breakdown that takes place when a person loses a tooth or has some other dental problem. Dentists use bone tissues from other areas of the person's jaw or artificial bone tissue. It can take up to three months to fully recover from a bone graft.

4. Corrective jaw surgery

This oral surgery corrects deformities in the jaw or can realign a person's teeth and jaws so they perform better. At times, such surgeries can also be used to improve a person's facial appearance. Corrective jaw surgery is often reserved for those with severe orthodontic issues that are not responsive to orthodontics. Many patients who get corrective jaw surgery often have to wear an orthodontic device during the recovery stage or until the teeth reach full alignment.

This treatment is reserved for those who have stopped growing. That is around the age of 16 for females and 21 for males. Issues jaw surgery can fix include:

  • Making it easier to swallow
  • Severe sleep apnea
  • Repairing birth defects and facial injuries
