What to Do if a Tooth Falls Off Your Denture

Denture Adjustments Lilburn, GA

When you have dentures, they will inevitably have to be repaired. Maybe you dropped your dentures in the sink and cracked them. Maybe a tooth fell out while chewing something sticky. Fortunately, most types of denture damage can be repaired easily and affordable. There are even over-the-counter denture repair kits available if you feel you can tackle a repair yourself. If not, many general dentist offices have dental labs where broken teeth and other denture damages can be repaired.

When you break a tooth and it falls out of your dentures, there are several steps you should take to ensure a successful repair. Broken denture teeth can not only wreak havoc on your smile, but it can also make eating and speaking difficult. If left unattended, broken teeth can disrupt the overall fit of the dentures and irritate the gums over time.

Fixing denture teeth

When a tooth falls out of a denture, there are a few important things to do, and none of them involve panicking. For starters, wearers should always gather up any broken pieces, including the tooth and other bits that may have broken off from the denture base. The more pieces a wearer can gather, the better chance they have at a successful, less costly repair. Next, the overall denture should be examined for signs of damage other than a broken tooth. Knowing exactly what is wrong with the dentures will help the wearer be able to describe the damage when they contact a general dentist.

Once a wearer has a better idea of what is wrong with their dentures and has all the broken pieces gathered up, a dentist should be contacted. Depending on the extent of the damage, a tooth repair can take anywhere from a few hours to a day or more. Additionally, if the damage is severe, the dentures and any broken teeth may have to be sent to a dental lab and an entirely new set of dentures may have to be fabricated. All these steps are necessary for proper repair, though. The sooner broken teeth are repaired, the sooner denture wearers can enjoy fully functional dentures again.

Self-repair kits

In addition to dental labs and dentist offices, there are over-the-counter repair kits available to help with minor repairs. However, these kits are not for everyone. Denture wearers should not attempt to repair a broken tooth with a repair kit because they might make a mistake. Then it may be more difficult or even impossible for a professional to repair. When that happens, a new set of dentures will have to be made. It is also worth noting that even self-repair kits only offer temporary solutions. Eventually, a wearer will have to take their dentures to a dentist for a more permanent repair.

Denture tooth repairs made easy

If one of your denture teeth recently broke off your dentures, do not forget to gather all the broken pieces and contact a general dentist. There are a few different repair options available, and while some may take a day or more, minor repairs may only take a couple of hours. Do not delay.
