How Long Will it Take to Replace Missing Teeth With Dental Implants?

Having missing teeth can present a whole host of problems for someone each day. It may make eating and regular cleaning difficult while also putting a dent in one’s self-confidence. However, there is hope!

Dental implants are still rather new to the industry but they are providing an array of benefits, especially to people who have missing teeth. However, it is important to be aware of the dental implant process and how long it will take to replace the teeth that are missing.

Read more below as we outline how long it will take to replace missing teeth with dental implants.

Dental implants

What are they?

Dental implants are tiny surgical components that work as a dental appliance. They are shaped like screws and are interfaced with a person’s jawbone in order to replace the missing tooth structure. Implants then take the place of the original tooth structure and will attach to an artificial tooth that will be later placed.

Artificial tooth replacement options consist of dental crowns or implant-supported dentures. A dentist will likely determine which is best for each patient.

How long does it take?

The initial dental implant procedure itself does involve an invasive surgery so the time frame can vary depending on how many implants are needing to be placed. It typically takes an hour for one implant to be placed.

Once a dental implant is placed within a person’s mouth, there is a significant period of time that is required for a person to heal. This process can take anywhere from four to six months. If a person has multiple implants placed then it is likely that the healing process will extend closer to six months.

During the healing process, the dentist will closely monitor the person’s mouth to see how well the implants are bonding with the jawbone. It is likely that the person will need to visit their dentist every few weeks. Having the implant and wound regularly checked will ensure that it is healing correctly and that infections don’t begin to form.

Is it worth the wait?

Some people may be thinking to themselves that four to six months is a long time for something to heal, just to replace a missing tooth. And, while four to six months can be seen as a relatively long time, the implant is worth it.

People that have missing teeth are more likely to have infections or discomfort form, and dental implants can be a great way to solve this problem. While the healing time does seem lengthy, the benefits that will be gained from having the implant heal and bond properly can last a lifetime.

Dental implants are great replacement options for missing teeth. They allow people to smile without hesitation and to get back to chewing normally each day. While the healing process can be lengthy, the implants themselves are likely to last forever - thus making the four to six months worth the wait.
