What Do Invisible Braces Look Like?

Invisible braces are a great way to fix issues with teeth alignment such as crooked teeth, overcrowding and gaps between teeth. By learning more about invisible braces and how they look, patients can be in a position to make an informed decision about treatment and know what to expect throughout the process.

What to expect with invisible braces

Invisible braces such as Invisalign® offer many unique benefits that other teeth straightening solutions cannot offer, including the ability to straighten teeth discreetly. The following is everything to know about the invisible braces process, including what they are, how they look and how often they must be worn each day.

What are invisible braces?

Invisible braces are transparent trays that are custom-fit for each patient. They are worn over teeth and gently move them into a more ideal alignment. The most common brand of invisible braces is Invisalign®. They are considered by many dental professionals and patients to be a good alternative to traditional braces. For adults and teenagers who may feel insecure while wearing metal braces around others, Invisalign® is the perfect solution. However, they are most ideal for mild to moderate issues, and they are not always the best option for severe cases.

Are invisible braces noticeable?

Invisible braces are actually pretty invisible to others. While others might be able to notice them close up, it does not typically cause a cosmetic concern for the patient even when they are noticed. When compared to traditional braces, invisible braces are a far more attractive solution. The trays, or clear aligners, used in Invisalign® treatment look like clear plastic trays, similar to that of a high-quality mouthguard.

How often do invisible braces need to be worn?

Invisalign® patients are encouraged to wear their clear aligners for at least 20 to 22 hours each day. This ensures that they are as effective as they possibly can be and that the total duration of treatment is not longer than it needs to be. With that said, there are certain times when the invisible braces can be removed. Most notably, patients are encouraged to remove the aligners while they are eating or brushing their teeth. It may also be acceptable to remove them during a big presentation at work or school.

What to expect after invisible braces treatment

If the patient wears the invisible braces for at least 20 to 22 hours each day, then treatment generally takes between a year and a year and a half, although some patients see the desired results in as little as six months. After treatment, the patient is provided a retainer to wear, which keeps teeth in their new position. It is good to note that retainers are visible, unlike the Invisalign treatment the patient will have been used to.
