Your Teeth Straightening Options: A Deeper Look at Invisalign®

Invisalign® clear aligners are one of the options you should consider when exploring teeth straightening options. These treatments involve wearing transparent plastic trays that gradually push the your teeth to a better position.

Invisalign® provides an effective yet discreet way to straighten teeth without having to make significant changes to your regular routine. It has emerged as one of the top teeth straightening options for people who would rather not deal with metal braces and their poor aesthetics.

How teeth straightening with Invisalign® works

Treatments with Invisalign® clear aligners begin with a consultation with a dentist. The patient is examined to determine the root cause of their poor teeth alignment. Invisalign® works well on alignment issues caused by poor teeth positioning, but it does not do much when it comes to issues caused by the patient's jaw being in an abnormal position.

Once the dentist determines the patient's orthodontic issues are being caused by their teeth being in the wrong position, the dentist can clear them for treatment. Invisalign® can be used to fix teeth alignment problems like:

  • Overjets
  • Crossbites
  • Crooked teeth
  • Underbites
  • Overbites
  • Spaces between teeth

The process of designing the clear aligners the patient will use for their treatment starts with the dentist taking digital images of the patient's teeth. These images are combined to create a digital model of the patient's teeth. The model is then used to run projections of what the person's teeth will look like as the treatment progresses, and it is used to design the clear aligners the patient will use during their treatment.

Invisalign® treatments involve wearing multiple sets of aligner trays over the duration of the treatment. Each set of trays further in the series pushes the patient's teeth closer to the desired alignment. Each tray is worn for about two weeks before being switched out with another set. When the patient is done with their final set of clear aligners, their teeth should be in the desired position.

Benefits of Invisalign®

The most obvious benefit that comes with Invisalign® is the discreet treatment it provides. The aligner trays worn are virtually impossible to notice. This benefit has made teeth straightening more accessible, as many adults who are not open to wearing metal braces can now fix the alignment of their teeth without having to deal with people staring at all the metal brackets and wires in their mouths. Other benefits of this treatment option include:

  • Invisalign® aligners can be easily removed for oral hygiene or meals
  • The aligner trays used are more comfortable than traditional metal braces
  • Treatment times are sometimes shorter with Invisalign®
  • The patient gets to show off their smile while improving the alignment of their teeth
  • Invisalign® aligners are less likely to irritate soft tissues like the cheeks
